This lighthouse sits on the northernmost tip of the Monterey Bay Peninsula; its beacon has flashed nightly as a guide and warning to ships off the rocky California coast since February 1, 1855.

Monarch Butterflies

If you’re fortunate enough to be in Pacific Grove during the fall or winter, you will be witness to one of nature’s most incredible spectacles: the annual migration of the Monarch butterflies. Tens of thousands of Monarchs descend on Pacific Grove in October, and take up residence in the pines and eucalyptus trees of the Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary.

Salt Lake City, UT 84101

OPENING DATE

1910

HISTORY

The late 19th and early 20th centuries brought eager speculators to Utah’s mining areas, but it was not until 1910 that a hotel of incomparable quality was constructed to accommodate the individuals who had discovered wealth in the rich veins of Utah’s hills. Brothers David and Joseph Peery commissioned prominent European architect Charles Onderdonk to build a grand hotel to accommodate business people and their families, and the resulting Peery Hotel was a three-story showcase of Prairie-style architecture combined with motifs of classical revival influence. It has been in continuous operation since 1910, and in 1999 the Peery was remodeled as a luxury boutique hotel that simultaneously recalls its place in the history of Salt Lake City while catering to the discerning modern traveler. Acquired by Malibu Hotel Group in 2007, the company recently completed a thorough exterior renovation of the property.

LOCATION

Situated in the heart of Salt Lake City, the hotel is within walking distance to Salt Palace Convention Center, Temple Square, Energy Solutions Arena (home of the Utah Jazz), Family History Library, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, many theaters, and much more. There are 68 restaurants and 27 bars and clubs located within a two-block radius of the property. The Peery Hotel is just 7 miles from the airport.

Connoisseurs of period detail will appreciate the grand staircase, authentic antiques, marble flooring, and the charm of the old-style pigeonholes behind the original front desk for letters. The vestibule’s ‘egg and dart’ cornice work took an incredible 14 years to hand turn, and natural light illuminates the hotel’s corridors.

March 11, 2009

PARK TAHOE INN WINS CITY OF SOUTH LAKE TAHOE 2008 DESIGN AWARD

(South Lake Tahoe, CA)—The new Park Tahoe Inn, located in South Lake Tahoe, California, has won the 2008 Award of Excellence for Outstanding Design for a Commercial Remodel by the City of South Lake Tahoe. The Park Tahoe Inn was chosen over six other commercial properties in the area.

“The property reflects the efforts of Malibu Hotel Group to bring their high standards for design and exceptional quality of construction to the South Lake Tahoe area, and I am extremely proud of the fact that this has been recognized by the City of South Lake Tahoe,” states Gary Peterson, President of Malibu Hotel Group. “The entire company is deeply honored by this recognition.”

Malibu Hotel Group, which acquired and re-branded The Park Tahoe Inn in 2007, completed a top-to-bottom makeover of the 116-room hotel in a ‘mountain contemporary’ style in 2008, including new furniture, light fixtures, carpeting, drapes, and Tempur-Pedic beds. The exterior, which resembles a rustic alpine lodge, has been upgraded with a resurfaced parking area, fresh paint, and new fencing, pool decks, lighting, and landscaping.

The Award of Excellence for Outstanding Design program was established by the City of South Lake Tahoe in 1995 as a means to recognize new construction projects or major remodels that exemplify outstanding design as defined in the City Design Manual. New commercial construction, commercial remodels, multiple family residential landscape maintenance, and public service projects are eligible to receive the annual award.
